Olivia Newton-John's ex-partner has been found alive in Mexico five years after disappearing, according to media reports.
Patrick McDermott vanished at age 48 after failing to return from an overnight fishing trip off the California coast in 2005. He had broken up with Newton-John, his nine-year girlfriend, just days before. Originally, police believed he fell overboard, but his body was never found.
Private detective Philip Klein was hired by the American television show Dateline to investigate. He says he recently confirmed McDermott is living in and out of Sayulita, a Mexican village, and working on a tourist yacht. McDermott is allegedly living under his birth name, Pat Kim.
Similar reports first surfaced last January, but Klein says he now has proof that McDermott is alive from voice recordings the man and his lawyer have provided - in return for the detective to leave him alone.
Klein tracked down the vanished cameraman via a misisng person website he set up for the case. He says he monitored IP addresses of computers that went on the website and found a cluster on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
Why McDermott chose to disappear remains a mystery.
There have been accusations that he staged his own death to collect on his life insurance and that he wanted to escape mounting debts as well as child support payments. But media reports say there is no indication that McDermott has done anything illegal.
One thing seems to be clear. McDermott isn't interested in being found.
As the Daily Mail reports, McDermott doesn't want to be hounded, he 'simply wishes to be left alone.'
