But in 2001, networks wouldn't even listen to Simon Cowell pitch show
LOS ANGELES - In 2001, Simon Cowell figured a singing contest snapped up by British TV would be an easy sell in America. Instead, network responses ranged from lukewarm to hostile.

It sounded great on paper: "American Idol" would have a Michael Jackson night! After all, MJ has approximately eight million hits, some peppy and upbeat, some slower and more ballady. The Jackson catalog offers choices from different decades, and even some Jackson 5 oldies. And whatever you think of the singer himself, the best Michael Jackson songs always got the audience up and dancing.

This week's elimination was no surprise on "American Idol," except the manner in which it came.

In its annual effort to make younger viewers switch from Top 40 radio to oldies stations, “American Idol” brought back the songs-from-your-birth-year theme this week. That left most focusing on the 1980s catalogue, and since few 1980s songs are still hits these days, the judges tended to be unhappy with the song choices and arrangements that resulted.

I'm a huge fan of Danny Gokey, and I hope he wins it all. And unlike everyone else, I really can't stand Adam Lambert. I don't see why everyone likes him so much....his voice grates on my nerves.

I agree with you. I don't get all the Adam Lambert hype. I'm pulling for Anoop though.

Let me see :
Danny Gokey : He loves to pimp dead people in his family, especially his dead wife. I can't stand his voice. I hope I didn't offend anyone with the whole ''dead wife comment''.
Adam : I think he is really good, a lot people compare him to Freddie Mercury, and I can see why. I think he is the favorite to win it all.
Megan Joy: She was my favorite. I was pulling for her, so disappointing to see her go.
Anoop: So far, I am disappointed in him, I am kinda expecting more.
And I cant really remember the rest, so I guess, that's my AI review.

The theme of the week on “American Idol” was Rat Pack standards, with the singers trying to croon their way to the final four. Sadly for the show’s entertainment value, this did not come with the typical Vegas two-drink minimums for the judges and host Ryan Seacrest.

A week after Adam Lambert was the second lowest vote-getter on “American Idol,” the show gave him the biggest present ever: legendary rock guitarist Slash.
The former Guns N’ Roses guitarist and current member of Velvet Revolver was the guest mentor for rock week, which gave Adam a pair of advantages. It’s a genre that he could be expected to excel in, and also one that his two main male rivals aren’t ideally suited for. That ensured a week that should bring Adam out of the gutter and back on top of the charts, where he’s spent most of the season.

Lambert and Allen tackled three tunes, but final song may tell the tale
The judges have always held a great deal of power on “American Idol.” A well-placed barb from Simon Cowell can doom a contestant, while praise can thrust another into the spotlight. But Tuesday’s “Idol” saw the newest judge, Kara DioGuardi, put in a position where her words may have decided this season’s winner.

‘Idol’ seeks ‘more authentic feeling’ this season
With new crop of ‘kids,’ Ellen DeGeneres, show strives to remain No. 1
LOS ANGELES - "American Idol" was the colossus that dominated television in the new century's first decade, generating top ratings, a heady share of buzz and a handful of bankable stars including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson.
"THIS is ‘American Idol,'" host Ryan Seacrest first intoned in 2002, and the singing contest that was a summer surprise turned into an annual visitor with staying power.

Best bets: ‘American Idol’ returns, minus Paula
It's baaaack. "American Idol" has returned, with new judge Ellen DeGeneres replacing Paula Abdul. How will witty DeGeneres, who lacks a professional music background, fit in with the other three judges? If you've ever watched even an episode of this show, you know what else to expect — crazy delusional singers, a few great discoveries, lots of Simon Cowell snark, and by the end, a new "Idol." (Season premiere Jan. 12, 8 p.m., Fox.)

‘Idol’ finds talent in Boston, but little confidence
Guest judge Victoria Beckham doesn’t have much of interest to add
The most surprising aspect of the Boston auditions was that a city not exactly known for its politeness has a bunch of singers who had everything but confidence.
Leah Laurenti, Katie Stevens, Bosa Mora, Justin Williams … each made it to Hollywood, but all seemed really surprised to be liked. Laurenti in particular was dinged for not having the necessary swagger. As Kara said, “I think you need to know you really are good.” She was one of the bright spots in a mostly bland two hours.

Oh my gosh this show is one of those weird things that I don't want to like but if I'm flipping through the channels and catch the early auditions, it's like a trainwreck...so bad but I can't look a way. My mom's been really into this show. I got her tickets to the Idols on Tour thing once when Daughtry and such were on there. So glad I didn't get stuck on this show lol.

‘Idol’ finds only 13 to advance in Chicago
“Idol” host Ryan Seacrest reported that 12,000 hopefuls auditioned in Chicago over a two-day period, with only 13 making it to the next round. Those may seem like long odds, and a good reason for parents to get their kids to do homework instead of working on their voices.
However, that’s nothing new for that city. After all, it’s about the same odds as the Cubs winning the World Series, and there were a number of contenders who emerged from the Windy City auditions.

Stones night a ‘Beast of Burden’ for Idols
Two hours is a very long time to commit to a television show. Add the interactivity element to it, as “American Idol” does, and you’re asking viewers to spend their entire after-dinner evening watching relative unknowns cover Rolling Stones tunes, and then pick up the phones to vote and text for their favorites.
Sometimes, that is a lot to ask. Even for a seasoned professional like myself, Tuesday was one of those nights where I looked at the end-of-the-show recap and thought, “Oh, yeah, Casey James did sing something tonight, didn’t he?” These are episodes where everyone blends together unless they really stand out, for good or ill.
So on a night where nobody was terrible enough to be the obvious choice to go home, the question becomes who was memorable enough to rest easy?

Talent? What talent? ‘Idol’ is lousy this season
Thousands auditioned, almost 200 made it to Hollywood and after weeks of cutting the fat, the remaining “American Idol” contestants represent the best and the brightest young vocal talent this country has to offer.
Ha! Just try saying that with a straight face.
As anyone who’s actually followed the competition so far this season already knows, this band of mostly mediocre singers fails to represent the best of their own so-so early ranks, much less the best of the national talent pool. And despite the handy excuses Simon Cowell and his fellow judges insist on making for them week after week, the problem isn’t about song selection or a particular vocalist’s need to find his or herself musically. It’s not about being “a little pitchy” or having an “off night,” either.

Terrible performance gets ‘Idol’ singer booted
Paige Miles was sent packing on a night where there were few surprises
As the folks at “American Idol” reminded us constantly, this week was a Big Deal because only the top 10 finalists make it onto the summer tour, and whoever got sent home Wednesday would come in 11th.
You might ask, “Why doesn’t ‘Idol’ let all 12 finalists participate?” The answer, of course, is because then nobody would care who finished in 10th or 11th, and how would the show sell its quota of cars and Coke then?
Anyway, the person who will have to spend her summer singing at the local amusement park instead of on the modern carnival circuit is Paige Miles. I would have tagged that with a “Spoiler Alert!” warning, but what’s there to spoil? Did anyone really think she was going to survive her Tuesday night train wreck?

American Idol rediscovers some of its mojo for Season 10
Aerosmith's Steven Tyler is the panel's edgy one, while J-Lo lends an A-list cachet, and veteran Randy Jackson is now the big dawg
It was all there for Wednesday's Season 10 premiere -- judges, nervous contestants, the tears and the fears and the hovering host Ryan Seacrest and that theme song that is by now more recognizable than any of the hits charted by an American Idol victor.
