Thirteen million AIDS orphans in Africa! There are estimated to be one and a half million AIDS orphans in Kenya alone.
According to African tradition, babies and children left behind following the death of their parents are absorbed by the extended family.
In reality, extended family members are often sick themselves, extremely poor, and not interested in caring for their orphaned relatives.
The AIDS epidemic has put a serious strain on the already precarious social network in Africa, leaving serious gaps when it comes to support for AIDS orphans. As a consequence, neglect and malnutrition are enormous problems for orphans, who find themselves competing for scarce resources with the extended family’s own children......
