I am not interested in debating who YOU think is the most overrated, just interested to see who you think gets far too much credit. So... don't go flaming someone else's choice because you got it bad for Slash or something.

My top 5 overrated (bands musicians):

1. Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. I put them together because one of them taught the other.
2. Kings of Leon (I had to look this one up, because I have only heard two of their songs)
3. Daughtry
4. KISS. That's right KISS Army... someone finally said it ;) (have some fun)
5. Def Leppard.

No need to give reasons, just spout out who you think is the most overrated.

Musically speaking I live under a rock. I only heard that Delialah song and knew "this is what ever girl will want to hear for 2 years until the next fad comes along".

The only new music I am exposed to is whatever my friends listen to. One of them forces us to listen to Justin Bieber just to get everyone hot and bothered. Ive been considering buying him a Justin Bieber dinner set... But I am cheap, it would be funny though.

Christina Aguilera. Don't get me wrong, I used to love her, but now she's just so overrated, and not as good as she used to be. Not to mention the lip-synching and messing up the National Anthem.

Interesting thread - somebody will walk away unhappy! lol

green day - I'm not sure about 'overrated' but they're one of those bands that i think i should like, and everyone goes on about how they're punk (ha!), and how amazing they are, but I don't get it or i don't see it....and they keep putting out cookie cutter pop - i'm all for simplicity, but they sound like a novelty act to me...

i do enjoy watching green day in interviews, they're fun and entertaining...lol

though not related to the green day thing - in general i think the focus on virtuosity in players is way overrated - i've seen tons of guitarists that can rip an eddie van halen solo, or guys that seem to have to show everything they can do in every song they play, but it doesn't move me, but a few notes from hubert sumlin, or to listen to howlin wolf growl...that's where it is, it's visceral...to me anyway

A few of my friends are big on punk, and they HATE Green Day, at least the new stuff. But I never listened to them to begin with.

However I do agree. Growing up a lot of my friends seemed to be advancing further than me in guitar: playing solos and such. However I soon learned that was all they could do, copy and paste. They did not understand WHY it worked or HOW it worked.

This is why I've been such a proponent of rhythm guitar and learning how to build chords. If you can't play rhythm, you aren't worth a damn.

The best soloists can play rhythm well.

This is also why I love listening to Miles Davis, a good portion of his stuff is not super fast (though he can and does play fast), but it slow and melodic. The notes he chooses to play or not play blow my mind, and it sounds so... simple. So What, Bye Bye Black Bird, Stella by Starlight. All great.

Don't get me wrong, I also dig John Coltrane's fast and wild approach, but even when he does that hes doing it all based on the chord structure.

On a side note, all the kids who played the fast solos, don't play today.

hehe - I've played with some guys who played lead, and then, saying something like - 'ok, when we do the part that goes Cm to G', and then getting a blank look ! lol
I'Ve started playing some lead and need to know the progression to put something together (though am working on holding back and playing appropriately...lol)

I know how you feel, I can't play with a lot of people because when I say "Okay were gonna play Dm7 G7 Cmajor 7 and A7" They say "ok... what?"

The universal language is no longer universal. Then I try to tell them what scales they can play... man...

Typically I try to stick to a simple 1 4 5 blues progression. Its simple, and anyone can understand it.

Some of them want to start a jazz band with me, which is cool. But I will have to tab everything out, and give them sheets to read and study.

But I tell you what, even finding people who PLAY is getting harder. I used to know 40 people who played. Today... even for young people... its not as popular to play an instrument. Sad

no doubt...i just got a book on Django Reinhardt - I'm not so much a jazz guy, but i like the sound, tone, warmth of Jazz guitar, and there's a lot I can learn from this...

then there was the time i overrated myself - local sunday afternoon jam at a blues bar - these guys ask me (before i had seen them play at all) 'hey why don't you sit in and jam on bass - just a simple I - IV - V blues' - then this guy busts out the most amazing jazz playing i've ever seen, leaving me in the dust...lol

it was a good time, and they were cool about it, and we did find some common ground, but was a good reminder, that as I improve, how much there is to learn...

Django did more with 2 fingers than anyone else has done with all 4.

I love the stuff he did with Grapelli, I don't think there's a single Django tune I don't love. He's a very different style of jazz, but man... great stuff.

I'm a mediocre jazz player at best, at least when it comes to solos. I'm damn good with chords, so its really just a matter of learning what scales fit over what chords, etc etc.

I do well enough, but I practice every day to learn more.

i hear ya - I'm pretty good with the chords and voicings, but not like a jazz player - i'm usually in awe watching the chords, and bass runs, and transitions between chords and so on when i see a good jazz player...and with those big guitars, looking all laid back...it's cool...lol

All my chords studies have been basically jazz. I love the American songbook man. All those old Gerswhin tunes are just awesome.

I also dig Theo Monk, everyone stole his work; and man what a genius!

I started in the blues, but my teacher eventually worked me into jazz when I was about 16. I had to quit lessons when I was 18, so I never got the learn all the fancy stuff.

Now that Ive gotten older and am gainfully employed I went back to study just jazz improvisation. Basically scales to chords.

Its made everything else infinitely easier.

You'll be that way when some young up start says "Nirvana sucks".

Honestly, the 80s has very little to offer the music scene. Its much like today...

There seems to be a rise in fall of music from dance-music (sorry folks... I wont put techno pop/dance in the category of music. If its played by a computer... its not music). The 80s was a lot of electronic music.

So what... Stevie Ray Vaughan.... maybe ZZ Top at times... Other than that I can live without the 80s scene.

I disagree, but possibly for different reasons.

Stevie Ray was probably the last great main stream guitarist/virtuoso.

I think he was overrated because people today talk about how great he is without knowing anything more than his top 2 songs. Like the people who say "Led Zeppelin is awesome, he's so creative".

Overrated skills wise? I'd disagree, but I wont throw tomatoes at you.

I hate punk music to no end, and dance music even more. Everyone has their own taste.

I doubt you'll find many people here who listen to records, and John Coltrane records at that. Some people hear Giant Steps and think "what?" I hear it and think "wow".

A lot of musical tastes are subjective...

Not that he sucks. He just gets WAY to much credit.

agree to a point about slash - he does a lot of the same - but i think I'd be friends with him - i like him...lol

for me, with Jimmy Page - it's about how he was the guiding force (at least allegedly) behind Led Zeppelin - sure, he gets sloppy sometimes, but man, there's some great live footage of him too....

I think for Hendrix, it's about time and place - I've seen some pretty messy video (maybe due to 'enhancements' or whatever), but he was the mainstream guy who was changing what people were doing on the guitar...at the time...at least that's what the articles and books tell me...lol

underrated - robbie krieger (the doors) - i just feel he had a unique style, coming from a jazz/flamenco background, and that he always (i think) played with his fingers...he could still put together a badass blues solo...

I disagree, Jimmy Page was only sloppy when he was drugged up or drunk. He was one of the best studio musicians of his day.

Theres plenty of great live Zeppelin stuff. Again I'm not knocking Jimmy, Im a huge Page fan. But he gets a huge following simply because he is Jimmy Page. A lot of people don't know the huge acoustic influence he had. People HATE Led Zeppelin 3 because its a lot of acoustic stuff, but Page and Jones loved that shit.

Don't forget the whole group was amazing, all fantastic musicians, especially John Paul Jones.

He is very underrated.

We all have different tastes and opinions so its hard to say who is overated for me. Im glad you guys said some of my favorite musicians cause I couldnt do it. I do agree that Hendrix and SRV are over rated though. Hendrix changed the way we look at the guitar, but I think hes far from the greatest. His career was cut short to though.

Just because someone is overrated does not necessarily imply that they are not talented.

Though I am a huge Led Zeppelin fan, they are incredibly overrated. Often times people really overlook their true greatness just because its Led Zeppelin. This also means they ignore their flaws. Some of Page's live playing really blows; probably because he was on heroin or drank half a fifth of Jack before he went on stage.

Throw in Kirk Hammett because, just like Steve Vai, he took lessons from Satriani. The sad thing is, I remember when Surfing with the alien first came out, I bought an Ibanez RG550 (which I still have and love but don't play much) just because of that album.

Kiss- Not only are Paul and Gene overrated, they've made millions of dollars selling themselves as just that. Mediocre musicians, brilliant promotions guys.
