What is NATO's Place In The Post Cold War World?

NATO=North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military type alliance between the Western powers in the lat 1940's.

Essentially NATO was formed in response to the USSR's take over of Eastern Europe. It was a military pact that we made to defend Europe against possible Soviet invasion... and with the exception of Red Dawn this never happened.

So now, for over 2 decades NATO as a practical organization has come into question. The purpose was defensive: if the Soviet's attacked. But we all know this isn't and won't happen; since the USSR is dead.

So, what is their place in the new world? Should NATO be disbanded? Should NATO redefining its objective to focus on other possible threats? Should NATO become the military arm of the UN?

What do you think?

Guitarist and singer Chuck Brown, who mixed funk, soul and Latin styles to help create the upbeat "go-go" scene in Washington DC in the 1970s, has died.

Known as the "godfather of go-go", Brown's biggest hit was Bustin' Loose, which spent a month at the top of the US R&B chart at the end of the 1970s.

Russian man jumps in chute to escape girlfriend

A man in central Russia had to be rescued by emergency workers from a rubbish chute after he jumped into it to hide from his girlfriend.

He plunged three floors from the eighth floor of an apartment building in Tyumen, Siberia, before getting stuck. Residents then heard the 31-year-old man's cries for help

Francois Hollande has been sworn in as president of France, becoming the first Socialist in 17 years to occupy the Elysee Palace.

Mr Hollande will later name his prime minister and fly to Berlin for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

He will try to "find a compromise" over the German-led focus on austerity as the way out of the economic crisis.

On Monday, the value of stock markets and the euro fell amid continuing political uncertainty in Greece.

I thought I put this in this thread as its, part of a journey am making!

So I put myself up for the elections of union representitive at my work place,
Am defending the rights of workers and all that...
It all started a bit as a joke, then when the bosses mocked me for even thinking about it,... I SAID OK... ILL DO IT FOR REAL THEN! They never expected me to go ahead with it, so I DID!
I hate it when Bosses dont take me serious, ok, am small and I joke around and laugh a lot, but fook when am being pushed in a corner, I become a little BUll!!!! hahaha, and I cant stand it If they let there egos get the better of themselfs when they have nothing to show for!!!!

Lao Liu is not alone. Many ordinary Chinese have been in the dark about Chen's dramatic escape.

China: Chen can apply to study in U.S.

On May 2, six days after Chen had slipped into the U.S. embassy, the state-run Xinhua news agency declared China was demanding an apology from the U.S. for giving refuge to a Chinese citizen "via abnormal means."
